The Coastal People: Southern Skies Centre of Research Excellence (CPSS) invites Expressions of Interest (EOI) in research projects that strengthen the mauri ora (flourishing wellness) of our coastal communities, restore and sustain coastal ecosystems, and grow the capability and capacity of our people. This call is the first step in a two-stage application process.
EOI DEADLINE: 17 October 2025
Submit EOI applications to cpss@otago.ac.nz
You do not have to be an existing member of CPSS to submit an Expression of Interest, and can apply for membership at any stage of the EOI or full research proposal process.
You will need to be a member of CPSS for your project to be approved – apply here!
Your budget should be a general overview on how much you will be spending on key project areas, such as salary, operational expenses, travel, wānanga/hui support.
Your budget should also factor in any overhead requirements from your host institution. Contact cpss@otago.ac.nz if you aren’t sure what this means for you.
We are anticipating some EOIs covering similar, or overlapping kaupapa. The process we are following will be to receive all EOIs in full, then Ki te Hoe will identify any overlaps during the assessment stage. At that point, applicants may be invited to explore aligning, or combining, their proposals. This will be a collaborative process to ensure the kaupapa is retaining integrity, while maximising impact and value.
E.G. Three expressions of interest have kaupapa focused on kina barrens in different areas of the motu. Rather than funding three $250,000 projects, the projects could be combined into one $750,000 project.
Ki te Hoe welcomes you to join a wānanga discussing the Coastal People: Southern Skies research programme funding round.
