Hauteruruku ki Puketeraki, Karitāne, is part of a hub growing strong relationships working on a kaupapa of mātauraka (education), mauri (habitat restoration), kōhaka (fisheries management), wairua (interconnectedness) and hauora (the health of the people, reflected in the health of the environment). The kaupapa of the Ruruku project is to bring the wider community together to wānanga around the planning and construction of a traditional sailing waka. The waka that is constructed will be used for restoration activities and research in the marine environment.
